A Short Season With Ernie

If you are a new visitor to my website: Welcome. If you have visited my website before, or if you know me at all, you know that I am something of a story-teller. I have written “histories,” for many of the paintings featured on the site. Often I have mentioned where I was, or perhaps what was going on in my life at the time. Sometimes I explained how a painting came about, why I chose the subject matter, and probably a story about the painting. I have always tried to keep it personal; the need to share my art. Some of the people I may have mentioned and loved are gone now, but the stories will always be there.

The same is true for A SHORT SEASON WITH ERNIE, my first book. I have wanted and NEEDED to write this story since I was a kid. Strangely enough, the Covid “lockdown,” with art galleries closed and people more concerned about having enough toilet paper than buying a painting, gave me the opportunity to write this book.

It is a personal memoir of growing up in the 1950s, a simpler time. I was a lucky kid, as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, growing up with a quirky but loving family, surrounded by the usual assortment of childhood friends and characters, and best of all, a wonderful grandfather who had been a major league ballplayer. What kid would have wanted to meet Connie Mack, Yogi Berra and other ballplayers; witness a Ted Williams home run at age 5, and play catch with, learn the game AND about life from a major leaguer on a daily basis? I was that kid.

A SHORT SEASON WITH ERNIE is so much more than a baseball book, even though baseball is a common thread. It’s a book written from the heart. You have probably read this before also, but I promise this book will make you smile, laugh out loud and probably cry. I hope you’ll want to read it.

A Short Season With Ernie

Tales From Crooked Creek

Tales From Crooked Creek is my second book and I’m excited about it. I dug deep into my memory bank and came up with some tales that I had nearly forgotten. I wrote much of it while I was incapacitated after three major surgeries. I couldn’t paint because my walker wouldn’t fit in my studio.

Unlike A Short Season with Ernie, my first book, only a couple of chapters (“tales”) are related, but they are all true. Some of the tales will make you laugh; others might make you cry. A couple of the tales nearly wrote themselves, and I was laughing as I wrote them. A couple of others brought tears to my eyes while I was writing. The tale about losing my daughter Tracy was possibly the hardest story I’ve ever written. I thought about omitting it, but all the tales are straight from my heart, so it needed to be here.

For baseball fans who enjoyed A Short Season with Ernie, there are three tales related to baseball, including a funny story about my brief friendship with Mickey Mantle. There are several tales that animal lovers will like, and one relating to the supernatural. Several tales are about people I knew who are gone now. A couple are famous, like John Denver. Some are not famous at all, like my childhood friend Georgie. I promise there is something for everyone in this book.
