One of the first people I showed this painting to took a long look at it and said “I can feel the heat of a summer day,” which is exactly what I was trying to get in this painting: Coastal Summer heat (and humidity?!) near the beach with just a hint of shade.

People used to tell me that my winter mountain scenes made them shiver, so after 20 years of living at the beach, it is nice to be able to make someone feel a little heat!

I have used the house in this painting in several other pieces, but I have changed the basic shape in each piece and taken a bit of artistic license with the background. The actual house, which is in Southport, is not right on the water, and the two chairs would be in the middle of the street! That’s the fun of painting, and until recently it was one of the few mediums where scenes could be altered to fit a whim or compositional improvement. Today, this can be done on a computer with a few clicks and the right movement of the mouse. I don’t know how to do that, and at this point in my life and career I think I’ll just continue to draw with a pencil and paint with a brush, and hope for the best.

I think it was Molly Ivins who said , “You’ve gotta dance with the one who brung ya!”

I like this painting a lot. I hope you do also.
