Corner Cupboard

This is a large, brand-new painting, the result of an idea I’ve had for quite a while. My artist brain works in strange ways that I can’t explain! As I often do, I found this great corner cupboard in an Antiques magazine, and that pretty much triggered the basic idea. I could neither afford the actual cupboard, and even if I could, I don’t have room for it. So, as I did with “Eastern Shore” and other major pieces, I built the cupboard in my studio and added the cans and crocks, constantly moving them around until I was pleased with the way it looked. It took over a week to settle on the set-up. Then I started painting. The red color was especially challenging, and as always, lettering on the crocks and cans was tedious and time-consuming. But rewarding!

The original will be shown at the 2024 Waterfowl Festival in Easton Maryland, so a few colorful oyster cans had to be in the painting. I have a few nice antique crocks, and a couple of the crocks were done from photographs. All three oyster cans came from my collection atop my kitchen cabinets.
