Must Love Dogs

This is my newest major painting. As far as I’m concerned, dogs are the best “people” on the planet, and I would rather be with a dog than about 98% of the people I know. I have never had a dog tell me, “The check is in the mail.” Or something like, “I’ll call you next week; we’ll have lunch.” Have you EVER seen a dog riding in a car or truck with his head out the window when it didn’t make you smile?

While visiting some friends in Maryland last summer and poking around in antique malls, I spotted (and bought) the white cast iron Pointer doorstop, and all the way back to North Carolina I thought about this painting. I needed a cast iron Lab, so my girlfriend Mary bought the pair of Lab bookends for me, and I was off and running. I had a lot of dog books, and a visit to my favorite used bookstore provided another 7 or 8 books that I could use. All the books in the painting are real books, including such great titles as “I Could Chew on This,” “Bad Dogs Have More Fun,” and “Old Dogs Are the Best Dogs.’ I can’t wait to read the new books, and my sentiments are echoed in the plaque at the bottom: “Dogs Are My Favorite People.”
