Cape Cod Preening Black Duck
Based on another Elmer Crowell (1862-1952) decoy from Doc Starr’s collection, this is a classic decoy, and certainly Crowell at his best. Black Ducks are among the most wary of waterfowl and are very difficult to fool, but it is easy to see how they could be fooled by this masterpiece, with a relaxed attitude, and Crowell’s attention to detail including bill carving, crossed wing-tip carving and his always marvelous painting. This decoy sold for $50,000 back in the 1980’s, and today it would probably fetch 10 times that much.
Of all the miniatures that I have made, this is probably my favorite and quite possibly the favorite of most of collectors of my miniature decoys.
